  • Installing Premiere Pro over Canopus DVStorm system

Posted by Armogadan23 on January 26, 2006 at 6:45 am

Hey there. I purchased my video system 4 years ago with the following config:
    Pentium 4 1.8GHz
    Windows 2000 Pro
    Adobe Premiere 6.0
    Canopus DVStorm
    Xplode 3

I would like to upgrade my system and take advantage of the software developed recently.

In particular, I’d like to upgrade to Windows XP and use Premiere Pro.
I’d like to be able to feed the video directly from Premiere Pro through the DVStorm Firewire to the TV monitor, as I have been doing with Premiere 6.0

Could someone please give me very thorough instructions as to how to install
Premiere Pro, DVStorm Software and Drivers, Xplode 3 effects on top of Windows XP

What is the order of installation?

    P.S.

The person who sold me the system created a Ghost CD for me, so that I can revert to the original system configuration if something goes wrong.

If someone could also point out to me how I’d be able to create my own ghost image, once my new system will be properly configurated, I would truly appreciate it.

Which version of PPro? For PPro 1.x you may simply download the driver from the Canopus support site and install it after the PPro installation.

For PPro 2 you might have bad luck. One of both sides, either Canopus or Adobe, seems to have no more interest on OEM business. This is why there is no driver available for the new Premiere version.

    It would be Pro 1.5

I need more specific instructions, please.

Along with my DV Storm, I received the Storm Edit, Storm Video, Storm Audio software package.

Do I install this first, or does PPro go on first?

I also received a HighPoint ATA Raid Management Software to control my multiple hard drives for video capturing.

At what stage do I install the HighPoint?

Which specific Canopus Drivers do I need to install? And when do I install them?

    Thank you in advance

As far as I know you have first to set up your system hardware properly, means first installthe harddrives and create your Raid. Attention: I lost 2 months ago two projects because in my Raid0 one HDD crashed. If you work commercially use Raid5.

Storm Edit, Storm Video, Storm Audio software package: Those are outdated softwarwe packages from Canopus. I think they are not supported any more. You could use them to do quick and rough cuts in realtime. I never used them, as I always captured in AVI2 format and worked in PPro. Anyway: This programs would come last.

Secondly I would install PPro, as this is needed to copy the Canopus plugins later on into the right foulder.

Than you can install the canopus dirver software and plugins. First you want to find out whether you have a Strom I or a Storm II, before you go to the Canopus download section and download the latest driver for Strom and Adone Permiere Pro 1.5.

last not least you can install the additional canopus software if you want.

This sequence of installation was as well erported to work fine:
    – OS (Win XP)
    -SP 2
    – device drivers: Chipset,Grafic- card,Sound-card,Raidcontroller,LAN,Storm 2
    -Premiere 1.5
    -Premiere Plugin
    -Storm 2 update
    -Video out Plugin
    -MPEG Craft LE (CD, s.o.)
    -Procoder Express (CD)
    -Mpeg Craft Update
    – all remaining patches

    Hope this helped.

    cheers

    Thank you, Juergen.
What exactly is the Premiere plugin and the video out plugin that you’re talking about?
And where do I get them from?

From reading your posts you appear to have the original storm, if you haven’t upgraded to the Storm2 software you should(if its still available, you would have to check with Canopus Sales)to use Ppro, some have tried to run the orig storm with Ppro using the last upgrade to the storm1, they have had limited success, also from the description of the system you would need some upgrading to run Ppro, at least a 2.8-3gig processor and 1gig or more of memory, be aware that many people have had problems with the Ppro/storm2 combination even with canopus’s latest drivers(Canopus no longer supports the Storm except for maintaining the driver database last Storm2/Premiere pro plug-in was ver1.53 quite a while back), the best thing to do is go to the Canopus factory forums and go through the posts, there is also a procedure for installing the Storm drivers for Ppro in a sticky post at the top of the Storm forum in the RT section.

I am not sure if this will help but I was successful with this when I upgraded to winxp and ppro.

I also found the telephone support to Canopus in the UK very helpful.

First of all, I’d like to thank all of you kindly for your input.
You’re right, Blast. I have the Original DVSTorm SE, not the DVStorm 2.
I’ve searched for hours today, and can’t seem to find it anywhere. It’s off the market.
If anyone knows where I can purchase just the Storm 2 software without PPro or anything else that usually comes prebundled with it, I’d truly appreciate it.

Storm 2 is available at e-bay at a high cost, which includes the hardware.
I already have the hardware, and just need the software update.
    It seems to be unavailable.

Thanx to David, I went to the Canopus Support site and had success with downloading the latest plugins.

According to the manual that came with the PPro 1.x v1.53 plugin

    Installation
One of the following Canopus DV products are required to install this package:
    DVRex-M1 with RT Option
    DVRex-RT
    DVRex-RT Professional
    DVStorm series
    DVStorm2 series

    Adobe Premiere Pro is required.

So, apparently the original DVStorm SE is supported.

But the big Q remains: are they just saying that, or am I actually going to have success using the original DVSTorm drivers if Storm 2 isn’t available.

You might have to contact Canopus Sales about the upgrade to Storm2(was $149 without the hardware mpeg encoder), various items that aren’t listed on the website are sometimes available from Sales, only way to find out is to call, they have a number listed on the website: http://www.canopus.us
The Storm2 upgrade contains new filters including a improved white balance, new transistions like 3D PIP, new transistions for Xplode, DVcapture which gets rid of reference files and allows capturing up to 3 video streams at the same time(time saver with multi-cam shoots), a bunch of other things including the video out plugins for AFX, APS.

[armogadan23] “Are you sure that DVStorm SE is not going to be compatible with PPro?”

In answer to that question, like I mentioned before goto the Canopus factory forum, you can reach it from: http://www.canopus.us you will have to register to access the whole forum list, then do a search in both the DVstorm and Premiere forums, keyword “limitations” to get an idea of how your workflow may go.
I personally use the DVstorm2 with Premiere 6.5 or Edius, with Ppro loaded, there was stuff that I wanted to usein Ppro that is limited by the Storm Ppro plugin so I use Ppro standalone with OHCI, everyone’s mileage varies, its best to read and/or post questions on the Canopus forums before jumping in.

You’re right, according to one person at the Canopus Forum:
“I’m using the new adobe premiere pro (1.5) editing software and i have noticed the following problem. When I start a new project with DV Storm’s settings all the Premiere’s effects (like extract, channel mixer etc) are being previwed very slowly. It looks like i have a pentium 2 proseccor with 256 MB ram.”

If I had the money I’d just get the Edius NX with HD Expansion Kit, and save myself the headache.

Meanwhile. I’ll probably stick to upgrading to DVStorm 2 and use Premiere 6.5

I have a question about the Edius NLE software that you’re using.
Which version of Edius do you have?
Can the Xplode 4 and Hollywood FX be installed into the Edius transitions?

Also, so far, I used Storm Edit to capture into 2GB files. Then I’d import them into Premiere and work with them.
Which software allows you to work with AVI2 files? I.e. Do Premiere 6.5/Edius allow you to capture AVI files without limit?

    Thank you.
