Installing more content from FCS 3
When I first upgraded to FCS 3 I didn’t install all of the content at that time. I installed the whole Final Cut Studio except DVDSP and Color. So today I decided to install DVD Studio Pro 4 and Color. Well the installation is telling me to put in the Soundtrack Pro discs and the Motion content discs. I already have all that installed on my machine! I only wanted to add DVDSP and Color! I just hope its not installing audio content and Motion content on top of what I already have installed. The Motion content I can maybe see installing for use inside DVDSP but this install at first said it was going to take 6 hours to complete but that time quickly came down but still something don’t seem right.

I have no idea what super-secret alien technology Apple used to smush all of that content onto those installation DVDs, but they clearly use something nobody else is using, because the Apple apps notoriously take so much longer to install from disc than any other apps on the market.
In any case Chuck, just go with the flow and let the Apple installation routine run it’s course. It’s incredibly and ungodly slow, but never as slow as the countdown suggests.
Personally, I think aliens gave Apple this technology back at the very beginning when Jobs and Wosniak were still operating out of their garage, and the so the estimated times for installation are still based upon the time to do the same thing on the original Apple I computer.

Which is exactly why the first thing I do with any optical disc -based suite of software (Apple, Adobe, etc.) is to make disc images of the installation discs on a fast hard drive and install from the disc images instead of the optical discs themselves. Sure, it takes a bit of time up front to image the discs, but any subsequent installation takes a mere fraction of the time to complete, and no disc swapping is necessary.
Of course all of this goes out the window should the software become only available through the Mac App Store… That is, unless it’s possible to store the downloaded packages in a permanent local directory. I’m not sure exactly how App Store installations will work. Anyone know?
