Installing Fonts
Posted by Richard Hutt on August 22, 2011 at 4:20 pmA simple question. I received a disc with over 600 ImageFonts Tru Type Fonts. I have installed on my computer and have no problem using them in Photoshop CS5. But they arent showing up in Premeire CS5. They show up as boxes. Is there something I can do to get them to work or does Premeire not accept True Type Fonts?
Thanks

August 22, 2011 at 5:06 pmHi Richard –
By ImageFonts, I’m assuming that these fonts are dingbats and icon sets (images rather than letters). If this is the case, many of these types of fonts do not have the full font set, which would account for your seeing boxes instead of the icon or picture.
You don’t say whether you’re on Mac or PC, and I’m on a PC, so here’s what I’d do. There’s a Windows accessory called Character Map, which when run will show you just which typefaces have images (or text for that matter), and what character key they are assigned to. In many dingbat faces, there may also be (in addition to not having the full type set) different mapping schemes, which might require you to type, say, ALT-045 instead of Capital A, for example
Just go into Programs/Accessories, and Character Map should be in there. If not go into one of the sub-folders to find it. Where it’s located could depend on which version of Windows you have. If you have a Mac, I think there’s a utility called Font Book which does essentially the same thing. If the fonts are correctly installed, they should show up in any application, not just PS, so I’m rather puzzled at your problem. Did you install through Fonts in the Control Panel?

August 22, 2011 at 7:58 pmHey Joe
Thanks so much for taking the time to respond. To answer your questions: Yes , I am using a PC. And I installed the fonts through the Control PanelI have opened up Character Map and it seems that all of the fonts that i installed have letters as well as characters available, which is also evident as i use them in Photoshop. They are not dingbats. If I click on a character, or place my mouse on a character, there is a box in the bottom of the Character Map window that says Character Code : 0x50 or 0x43 ect ect. Does that mean I have to type a “0” then a “50” to get, say, the letter “a” That doesnt make sense. If that is the case, is there a way i can map the Font to my keyboard so “a” is “a” and “b” is “b” and so on?

August 22, 2011 at 8:27 pmNo, that shouldn’t be the case at all. If the alphanumeric characters show up in Character Map, then they should all correspond to the keyboard characters. I would guess that there’s one particular font in the collection that’s causing the problem.
Are there any particular fonts that are showing up strange in Photoshop? I’m just wondering if there could be either a corrupt one, or one with an odd name (maybe with numbers in it?) that might be throwing things off? I remember having a similar problem a few years ago, and it turned out that there was one culprit typeface causing the problem.
Do you have the time to delete all the fonts you’ve installed, then add just a few from the collection, and see if you have the same problem? There are so many in your collection, that it would be madness to do it one by one (the install, that is), but maybe you can narrow this down.

August 22, 2011 at 8:31 pmThat makes sense that it could be a corrupt typeface. Good advice on loading just a few at a time. I will try that over the next day or two (when i can get a break from drowning under the current work load)
Thanks for your help. Ill post back when i have meesed with it some more. have a great day.
