Installing FCP without disks?
Hi there –
In one of the schools where I teach video, the MAC we’re using won’t read any disks. I need to install FCP, and wondering if there’s a way to do that without the CD/DVD drive? Could I load the installation software on an external HD and then install from there? Any other suggestions besides getting a new drive? (school that serves low-income kids, not a lot of money to spend)

On another Mac, you could load the discs and create disc images in Disk Utility. The other mac can then run the installs off the disc images. Added bonus, the install will take a half hour or so rather than 4 hours.

Absolutely!
You have to make a “disk image” to a firewire drive on a another Mac that does have a working optical drive. Open Disk Utility and read the help menu about it. The instructions are not complete, but it will give you an idea of what’s possible. Toast will also do the job, and you might that the instructions are more thorough.
