    hello,

Well, i finally got around to installing FCP studio 2. I knew that I’d be pushing the limits of my DP mirrordoor G4 especially with the demands that “motion” asks of the graphics card. and I’d read that i wouldn’t be able to view motion output on a monitor. HOWEVER, I didn’t know that by installing motion (as part of fcp studio2) it would DISABLE my external viewing of FCP!

So, now, I am unable to monitor (and/or output) both audio and video through my minidv firewire deck like I used with FCP.

My G4 has ATI Radeon 9000 Pro card in it and I’ve read that I need one of the following cards to monitor Motion:
TI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM

    My questions are:
    1) do i need to purchase one of the above cards and install in my G4
    2) are the above cards compatible with my G4
    3) is motion the only thing that is not allowing me to monitor a/v when i open fcp or does fcp6 also require my card to be one of the ones I listed.
    4) if answer is “yes” to first part of question 3, is there a way for me to “disable” motion so, i can output/monitor from FCP

sorry so long winded. you’re assistance will be greatly appreciated

Do you really want to upgrade the G4?

A Mac Pro will be more compatable with the entire suite right out of the box. And it will render & encode faster. And it will be fully compatable with Leopard, when that starts to ship (soon, perhaps?). And it will probably work with any other software you want to look at over the next 2 or 3 years.

Will your G4? If it was my money, I’d buy a new Mac & be glad for the tax deduction.

    arnie,

i hear ya. i just need to get this resolved…which will bring in some much needed income.

in fact, when i get fcp back up and running with this (small?) problem fixed…I’ll be able to finish this project that will allow me to get a new g5 mac pro. income must be more or at least equal to the outcome…or something like that.

any suggestions addressing my original question?

You need an AGP card. AGP cards for the Mac are getting harder to find now that Apple has switched to PCIe. And any card with ‘Mobility’ in the name goes into a laptop.

How much can you spend? Check places like New Egg, CDW and Mac Mall, which AGP cards on that list do they have in stock that are Mac Compatable?

    arnie,

thanks. here’s the info i found out about the cards…if anyone else has info to add to the discussion, that’d be super to hear from you.

    CARD(s) NEEDED:
TI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM

    from apple support discussion
The best card for your PowerMac is this ATI Radeon 9800 256mb made specifically for 2x/4x agp architecture This is the most powerful card you can put in a G4 tower and will
actually run Motion pretty decently as is definately qualified for FCS2.

Unfortunately, ATi is no longer making the 256 MB version of the 9800. They did just begin a new production run of the 9800 Pro, but it’s a 128MB edition. Should still be a lot better than your current card.

    It’s about $240, so it’s not cheap. https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/video/hardware/

[Steve Boultbee] “It’s about $240, so it’s not cheap.”

Actually, anything under $500 for video production is dirt cheap.

[walter biscardi] “Actually, anything under $500 for video production is dirt cheap.”

Very true. I was thinking not so much in terms of absolute cost as I was thinking of the fact that a 9800 Pro is four year old technology. If it were a PC card, the same thing would cost between $50 and $100. The PCIe cards for the Mac Pros and the last G5s aren’t much more expensive than the 9800 for a G4!

now that the discussion is getting slightly off course…
    thought i’d “reel” things in a little…

it turns out that I now, for whatever reason, CAN view through my usual monitor…and fcp seems to be working just dandy…

which leads me to the next question:
if i get the the error message:
“the installed graphics card does not support the openGL features recommended by fcp”
    everytime i open fcp…

    i wonder what i’m “missing”…or what capabilities i won’t be able to enjoy…
    oh, the joys, the sorrows…

    thanks for the discussion, regardless…

    Well… They’re only recommended features. 🙂

I’m guessing that you’re not going to get all of the FX Plug features. And FX Plug filters may take longer to render than if you had a newer graphics card.
