I apologize if this has been covered before. I’ve read the AE7 manual and searched the archives here for the answer.

In AE6.5 (and prior) if I was 4 seconds into my comp and inserted a new layer that layer would start at 4 seconds. Some of my colleagues hated this but I grew to love it. I would go precisely to the time I wanted a video clip to start, import it, drop it in the comp and it would start right there.

AE7 has changed this behaviour (at least on my system). I could be anywhere in the timeline and any new layer will start from the beginning.

I played around with it this morning and discovered that I could drop a clip into the timeline (as opposed to dropping it into the comp window). Dropping it in the timeline did allow me to make the starting point some time other then the beginning. But this had one big problem – it put the clip wherever I dropped it, not precisely on the time I was at. For example, I had the cursor at 4 seconds. I tried dropping a clip there but it put it at 3 seconds 26 frames.

I want to be able to drop a clip exactly where my timeline currently sits at. This functionality was automatic in AE6.5. How do I get it back in version 7?

The switch is in the Preferences. There’s a box that says insert new clips at the beginning or something like that. uncheck it and it will go back to putting them at the timeline marker

Thanks! Much appreciated! This was driving me crazy. I was so used to working the other way.

you can also use alt or option plus the [ to move the inpoint of any layer to the timeline marker

make that [ to move to the in point. ] moves to the out. adding the alt or option changes the in or outpoint to the current time.
