insert to tape frame issues
what is with this inconsistent frame issue with inserting to tape? sometimes it is dead on, sometimes it is early, sometimes late…
trying to lay back to DVW-A500 this time, but it happens with HDWs as well…FCP Studio 2 v6.0.4 btw 8 core mac, leopard 10.5.5
now tere are 2 VTR presets in the Device Control Preset window…VTR A and VTR B…looking at the settings, the only difference I see is that playback offset is different…set to 0 for VTR A, and +1 for VTR B…does this have any bearing on the output to tape, and where it sets it’s inpoint?
why are there 2 presets…
unfortunately, the client ran out of here without laying back, and without letting me take a couple minutes to see if I could fix it, so I don’t have the media to even try to test some more…but am I on the right path?

The different presets are there because somebody at your end made them as custom ones I’ll wager.
You need to set one up for each machine after you’ve checked accuracy. It will be different I’ve found from machine to machine depending on model and cable runs etc…
Need to burn a tape with a window burn which matches the VITC code, then adjust it +/- a frame or three or whatever to make it accurate on each machine. Has to be RS-422 or it won’t be accurate… ie, TC over firewire is hit and miss by a frame or two always… it’s just not made for frame accuracy I’m afraid.

really??? it’s that messed up?
couldn’t i just take the character output of the machine? don’t want to waste a tape of each format we use for this test…
everything is 422…we are a professional house…”F” firewire, lol
so just looking at the timecode on tape and comparing what we see in the capture and edit to tape windows…and adjust for that? seems simple, but seems silly that we have to adjust that for each machine…

Each machine will be different and will have different ballistic characteristics based on lots of things like spring tension, head wear, etc.

Are you referring to tape tension??? I guess what we’re really talking about is deck control and communication…
if my input is 1:00:00:00, but the deck starts editing at 59:59:29 that’s a communication issue, not a tension issue.
but what is confusing as well is that it seems to be different at different times…(per my editors). sometimes, it is a frame early, sometimes a frame late…I guess that could be attributed to using different setups, and changing decks….
my tests this morning…I could not recreate this issue…using 3 different deck settings…every one of them starting editing back at the right timecode…using a DVW-A500

The communication gives an instruction to the machine. How the tape machine responds, speed of response, tape acceleration, spring functions, tape tension being part of it, all will effect the edit point, which is why the software has to be calibrated to the machine response timing.

so regardless of what is causing it…when i change the offset to +1, it looks to be correct…(was able to have someone test it out while outputting to tape)
only problem, even though it is coming in on the correct frame, it is editing onto field 2 instead of field 1, can I set FCP to field 1? if so where, if not, how do I correct this?

Hey all,
We are having a similar problem here with laybacks from an FCP/Kona3 rig to both a Sony DVW-500 DigiBeta and a Sony SVW-5500 HDCamSR deck. We have tested several things that have resulted in either a +/- 1 frame offset and a +/- 2 frame offset (different drives, different deck protocols, AJA panel settings, taking devices out of line to deck, trahsing preferences, etc) and have not yet found a solution.
We would be happy to hear more about ANY solutions including individual deck presets (which I agree is crap to have to do; I would hope Apple is doing a better job than this). I am beginning to suspect the software version 6.0.4 (our other specs below). Were previous versions as persnickety with laybacks? We didnt think so, but we are unsure as we had been running a different configuration.
Again, any and all thoughts welcome and appreciated.
