Insert editing into a Dolby-E master?
Hi all – we have an HDCam master show coming from the network that has stereo l/r on 1 & 2, and Dolby-E on 3 & 4. They want us to insert segments into the program, much like a commercial insert. These inserts will be stereo.
I know FCP can ingest Dolby-e, but would cutting it and inserting something in the breaks destroy the encoding?

NO. Dolby-E is “burst” encoded so you can insert /assemble edit on tape. The frame rate must agree, obviously.

The caveat is that you must insert a Dolby E stream or else the surround audio just drops out with the inserts. You can’t insert PCM audio onto those tracks.
Also you will not get any level control or crossfades at the insert points.

Ah, I missed that. Yes you can only insert Non-Audio into a Non-Audio channel. Dolby E, although it can be any number of channels internally, is editable, but can’t be mixed and matched with non-encoded media.

ALSO
make sure your deck is set to CUT and not XFADE for audio editing. You can’t crossfade a Dolby E stream.
