  • Insert editing and moving everything automatically

Posted by Mil Bogo on June 10, 2008 at 1:37 am

    Hi,

I want to insert edit a clip into my timeline – but want everthing to move to the right when my new clip is added. I have several titles in different layers, and I would like it if these move automatically. At the momement I am selecting auto ripple on each event on each layer and then group. This is very cumbersome and prone to errors if I miss a even to select.

    Please help,

    Kind regards,
    Mil

Simple,..you just hold down your shift key while you select all the clips/events you want to move in unison…then you release and drag.
everything then moves accordingly, if you miss an event just undo
    and go again..(simple and quick).
There’s no automatic feature for this.

Go to the tool bar and click on “Auto-ripple”. That’s the icon with 2 boxes and a little arrow. Or CTRL+L. On the down arrow click it and select all tracks, markers and regions.

Then when you insert something, everything to the right will slide to the right together allowing you to do this automatically. Just be sure you don’t forget to turn it off when you’re done so you don’t accidently move everything again if you insert say a text box or something. There’s also 2 more choices on that auto-ripple depending on what you want to have moved.

For more info, go to help – search, and type in Insert. Scroll down to where it says insert time. That’ll explain it and show you what the icon looks like.

    Mil ~

I think what you are after is ripple moving every other clip on all and any other tracks to the right of your new inserted clip. If this is correct then next to the ‘auto ripple’ button on the top menu is a drop selection arrow. In this drop menu select the bottom option ‘All tracks, markers and regions’. Now if you drop a clip into any track everything on all tracks to the right of that inserted clip should move in unison to the right.

Or manual mode you can use your ‘Selection edit tool’ and draw a marquee box around all tracks and clips to the right of where you want your insert. Now you can drag the total selected area on all tracks to the right. Drop in your insert. Selection edit tool again and marquee select everything to the right of your insert and drag it all left.

Using the selection edit tool you can select a slab of tracks and clips and select to the end and hit ‘G’ and make a ‘group’ which will now move as a single block. Use ‘U’ to un-group. The help file explains all the group functions in detail if you want to use these.
