Input Gain setting in Track Compressor Plug-in
Does anyone know of a way (or if it’s even possible) to lower mic gain from Vegas BEFORE the signal is processed? Right now I’m working with a Shure x2u USB device to record directly (mobile, without a mixer) and what should be a moderate audio level is clipping on the lowest gain setting on the x2u. So I thought I’d fix that through Vegas, but in the Track Compressor plug-in, the input gain setting isn’t changing anything at all for me. Might the x2u be interfering/preventing Vegas’s input gain from working? Or is there a different way to lower the pre-processed signal?

You might look into adjusting the mic sensitivity in the windows audio mixer input. Click on volume control on the tray icon (near the clock) and click mixer. (windows 7) It may not show an input if the mic is not connected.

Yea, I always use an audio device that has a physical hardware input trim (i.e., M-Audio FW410, Prosonus FireStudio, Komplete Audio 6, etc.). Plugging a USB mic directly into your computer isn’t going to give you much control. See if the Mic came with any software that can control the input. Even some of my hardware devices have a software mixer panel that will allow some adjustments.

The Shure x2u is an interface between the computer and mic and has its own input trim. It’s supposed to be the most quality device of its kind, but it doesn’t come with any software of its own. The problem is that, with the trim set to its lowest, the gain is still far too sensitive in Vegas. (It can’t be adjusted in Windows mixer because it connects by USB.) Still trying to figure out a solution to the original question about Vegas’s input gain, so any insight on that is much appreciated.
If nothing else works I guess I’ll have to go back to using an external mixer – although that seems to defeat the consolidation purpose of the x2u! I’m not very familiar with this website yet, but does anyone know of another forum (here or elsewhere) for discussing recording equipment?
