  • Input appreciated: Hitfilm or AE?

Posted by Ron Whitaker on January 21, 2014 at 7:58 pm

For those who have experience with both, is one superior to another, or are they simply different options that do the same thing?

I’ve been immersed in AE for some time, and I especially like the mocha for AE option. I noticed that mocha now has a Hitfilm option as well, which is great!

I’d just like to get input on your experiences with both products.

One good thing is that Hitfilm is cheaper! But then again, like the saying goes, you get what you pay for.

    Thanks.

It all depends on why you want AE?

Here are a couple of differences that I can see having worked with both:

    1. HitFilm has support for 3D TEXT. AE does not.
    2. HitFilm has support for 3D MODELS. AE does not.
    3. HitFilm is integrated with Vegas Pro so that you don’t have to render. AE does not.
    4. HitFilm is a one time purchase. Adobe will bleed you dry every month until you die or go bankrupt.

The key thing for me is that HitFilm is integrated into Vegas Pro like Boris RED & Boris FX. That alone is worth the price over AE for me. Workflow is everything. Tweak something in HitFilm and see it instantly on your timeline… priceless!

I would download the trial of HitFilm 2 Ultimate or get the HitFilm Express version (free for a limited time) and see for yourself. There are lots of excellent tutorials on the HitFilm site that you can watch and judge for yourself.

You should also check out Boris FX (which was just on sale for $150 after my webinar… not sure if it still is) and Boris RED. Both are also very “AE like” and they can even run some AE plugins.

Thanks, John for your input. I’ll download the free version.

I REALLY like the idea of integration with Sony Vegas. That way you don’t have to render, render, render every time you want to go between programs!

    [John Rofrano] “Workflow is everything.”

Across all industries…it is not what is possible but what you can deliver and workflow greatly affects delivery.

Yea, HitFilm Express doesn’t have Mocha. It does have a point tracker of it’s own but you need to buy the Ultimate version to get Mocha and it’s on sale right now for $100 off ($299 USD I believe).

Ever since Adobe started the Creative Cloud debacle, I refuse to give them another thin dime.

Over the years, I have spent thousands on Adobe products – 4 versions of Photoshop, 3 versions of Dreamweaver and more.

NEVER again. They can rot for all I care.

Go with HitFilm. I never heard of it until now, will check it out.

Same here. Photoshop CS6 is my last one, and really, CS6 is damn capable now and in the future. The only ugly thing is if I get a new DSLR beyond those currently supported. The raw files will not be directly supported, but you can always go through DNG.
