  • inporting HDV .avi file from mac to pc not working… any suggestions?

I’m collaborating with a friend who shot his video in HDV, wide screen and captured in FCP. I shot in 4:3 DV and captur into CS2 and CS3. I receieved (2) 2 min files from him, one a .avi the other a .mov. When imported to both CS2 and CS3, the .avi display a rows of various colored dots in a grid pattern, the .mov display a codec problem upon import.

I ran the .mov through GSpot and it indicated that the codec is ‘hdv2’. Here is some info about the .mov file that may helpful should someone know what I should do.

    Display size: 1440 x 1080
    Len: 3:26.906
    Frms: 6,201
    kbps: 26547
    Qf: 0.570
    Pics/s: 29.971
    Frames: 29.971
    sar: 1.333 (4:3)
    dar: 1.333 (4:3)

    Audio:
    codec: twos: 16-bit signed big-endian
    info: 48000Hz

Anyone with suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

See if he can provide you a cross-platform codec QuickTime. The PNG codec is good (and lossless), as is “Animaton” (also uncompressed at highest quality). The Animation codec will probably produce somewhat larger files. For saving space, you can try photoJPEG at about 95% quality, though that seems to introduce a slight level shift.

Thanks for the advice. I’ll be sure and try this out!

Apple’s HDV quicktime codec is not available on the PC.
You have export HDV footage to something else (animation, DVcProHD – if you are down converting straight to NTSC DV.)
