    Hi guys,

Lately I’ve had the unfortunate problem of not being able to open Vegas 7.0e. When the splash screen comes up, Vegas begins to perform its normal loading operations until it arrives at “initializing UI [user interface]…” and computer hangs until I restart it.

There is one exception, however: when I do a fresh install (fresh install means installing Vegas AND Media Manager), after uninstalling Media Manager and its components (the SQL stuff), Vegas will start and finish its loading operations, and I will be able to use the program as if it is working. Not until I run the program for a second, third, fourth time, etc., does it hang when it tries to initialize the user interface. I am not quite sure why it works the very first time… but I’ve tried installing it, opening the program flawlessly, then closing it and opening it again, and watching my computer freeze.

I’ve done a fresh install of Windows to see if the problem lied in corrupt system files, but it did no good. I’ve tried reinstalling nforce-3 drivers as well as my graphics card’s (NVIDIA GeForce FX 5500) drivers, but nothing helps. I’m beginning to think this isn’t really a graphics problem.

Even though it says it’s loading the interface, I suspect this might have something to do with the Media Manager. The “initializing UI…” operation comes immediately after “initializing Media Manager…”, so maybe that’s a clue.

When I delete Media Manager 2.2 and Microsoft SQL Desktop Engine and start Vegas, it shows this before the splash screen:
“An error occurred with Media Manager. This feature will be unavailable. Media Manager initialization failed.” Details: “Unable to read Media Manager assembly and class names from registry.” When I press OK, the error closes, and with no sign of Vegas even open or loading, the computer hangs as if I hadn’t even tried to open Vegas.

Does anyone have any tips/ideas? Also, I should add that I’m not able to open Vegas 6 either. Everything said above applies to 6.0d (except Media Manager is 2.0). I found an error log for Vegas 6 (vegas60.log), but it showed nothing after the freeze; with Vegas 7, I can’t even find a log!

    Thanks for the help!

Tried repairing the registry with any registry tools that will clean out old garbage? I’d perhaps start there, then reinstall Vegas.

Thanks for the prompt response. I used Registry Mechanic to fix the registry, then reinstalled but I’m getting the same problems. I also tried unchecking the option to open Vegas with Media Manager (in preferences), but that did nothing.

I tried uninstalled Symantec Antivirus 2007 and Ad-aware 07 (both of which were monitoring the computer and I couldn’t just disable that with an option in the program), but there was no luck.
