I know this has probably been answered many times before… but I can’t just find the right answer in threads or the FCP manual. I am mainly editing SD DV tape mixed with JPEGS and Live Type graphics. I have read on this forum many times before..”never put graphics on a DV timeline”. So just wondering how I would do it then?? (BTW, output is QT self contained movie for IDVD / DVD Studio Pro). So firstly, under the sequence / sequence settings/quicktime video settings… should this be left at DV, or for best graphics quality, something like no compression or uncompressed? Does this setting effect material that you INSERT into the timeline, or only when you EXPORT it to a QT movie? I understand that uncompressed DV will not be better than DV, but better for the images / graphics?

Secondly, the LT manual states the preferred method for sending LT text to FCP is either dragging to timeline, or save and insert through FCP without rendering (so you can edit it on the timeline). I want the best possible quality of the LT material, so usually render it in LT 8 bit uncompressed.. then insert it into FCP. Would the preferred LT method of just dragging into the timeline, give the same quality results as rendering it uncompressed first?

    Regards

    Martin,

You’re close, but slightly askew of on-target. You can put ’em on a DV timeline, but change the compressor Sequence>>Settings>>Compressor to DV50 or ProRes. Then proceed as usual… When you render the sequence this will keep your graphics in 4:2:2 color space.

    Got it???

    Thanks David. That makes sense.

What about importing LT graphics? Just drag and drop using the DVCPro50 compressor as suggested?

Then everything you edit, including every shot you put in the timeline or every time you make a change in the FCP timeline, you will have to re-render.

If you’re editing DV I think you should just use the DV preset that matches your media.

    All the best,

    Tom,

In the old days that was true but no longer. Give it a shot.

If you set rendering to include Full as Apple now recommends you have to re-render everything for output, which you don’t have to do for native DV material, but I guess if there’s a lot of still images and graphics it’s worthwhile.
