    hi,
I recently did an avid media composer hall away, which as it turned out, seems to be missing some key ingredients, like the junker Mac it runs on, and – as far as I can tell, the actual avid media composer software. All the manuals are there, and I got a really nice microphone out of it, so all concerned are happy. The deal is I assign a reasonable dollar value to the equipment and the transfer is sorta complete.

That being said, on the hardware side I inherited a ultra 160/LVED, digidesign 888, a media 100 media array, a couple of the dlt/recorder players and a couple of lacy rate drives and a couple of boxes that say Avid on the front.

And, an avid Xpress DV 3.5 software package for the PC?? I tossed the avid Xpress on my PC and it said that I lacked a recognized dongle. My first question, no great surprise – what is a recognizable dongle?

I have contacted avid and Digidesigns about what I need to transfer ownership, but any real-world thoughts about what it’s really going to take to get the stuff to work (assuming it does work) and a guess to the value?

    Thanks,
    Gavin

The Dongle is a USB device that plugs in to verify that the software is in fact legal. If you do have this and it is still giving you the error, it is easy to fix. AVID in their infinate wisdom did not work with microsoft on their product and the Windows Hotfixes that they release sometimes disable the dongle. You will have to look it up on the internet somewhere but there is one hotfix in particular that gives you hell with this. I know that on WIndows XP, it keeps installing the hotfix whenever I run windows update. Start here if you do in fact have the USB dongle. If not, you may be out of luck.

    Hi johnathan,
somehow, I thought it was going to be something like that. I’ve already contacted avid and I’ll head back to the company and see what they say. If this stuff can’t be made legal, it does make it easy to assign a dollar value.

As a Vegas user, the thought of using an avid disk as a coffee coaster does have a certain perverse appeal.

    Thanks for the quick response,
    Gavin.
