Ingesting from a HD deck. What about the audio?
Hello all
Could anyone please brief me up of how HD ingest can take place with FCP?We want to ingest HD tapes, coming from a HD Deck in FCP. And what I am trying to confirm is this:
1.Is the audio from the HD Deck embedded through the SDI output?
2. If the audio is Dolby Encoded, will it be ingested as such?
3. If the answer to 2 is yes, how would I be able without the use of a DAW to decode the audio and perform minor edits?
4.And last – but not least 🙂 – what would be the best way to re-encode for the final edited file?Thanks!

Good question. Not in yet. Could you lay down for me what difference would this make?

If indeed your HD deck has SDI, your audio will be embedded.
You also need to have a capture card/IO device.
If you have HDV tapes, it’s a totally different workflow.

There’s too many to mention, but most likely it will be embedded audio. Do you have a capture card? I would hope that the deck will decode the dolby as FCP won’t handle it too well.

I am sorry I did not clarify the technical backgound.
It is definitely going to be HD Deck with an SDI output. And a Kona card is going to be used for the ingesting. What I am trying to clear out is how the editing process of with all encoded/ decoded audio (refer to my initial posting if you can please)

So, you say that the deck might decode the audio for you. But that “might” can worth a lot of money, avoiding the purchase if kit that does decode it :)…
If it does not, what happens then? As I am writing this I am thinking that the only other solution could be to feed the audio out of the HD deck to a Dolby encoder and feed the audio out of the Dolby Decoder to the Kona card upon ingesting. Would that be the best workaround?

Definitely the cheapest. I’d do it from the deck to ensure a/v sync. if you think you will be working with DOlby a lot it’s best to just buy it on the deck. you will use it all the time.

the Kona/ FCP workflow does not support Dolby encoded audio.
Dolby is a proprietary audio format and requires Dolby hardware to handle correctly.
