  • Informal Survey: Where is your project file in relation to your media & assets?

Hive mind question: where do you save your project file vs. the media and assets for your Premiere projects? All on the same drive? Project on a different drive than media?

(Researching the cause for some recent crashes & I suspect the old workflow we’ve been using – all on 1 drive – may be causing problems. Over the years I’ve done both without noticeable impacts – except when using FCP7. My recent switch back to Windows has me curious if things need to change.)

Project File : On Main Hard-drive
Assets : On external hard drive
If its business related everything goes on Google Drive

I keep project and media on fast external array. Everything together, easy to archive.

The application on my main internal drive (obviously).
Project on a different internal drive.
Assets on an external drive (fast!)
Sometimes render files on a different (fast) external drive.

Why? You don’t want a spinning drive doing multiple functions (like running the app and the system while also processing your project file) as it slows it down.

On a complex project (in AE) I sped up an output from 19 hrs. down to an 90 minutes once I spread everything out to 4 different drives.

I have an older (put pretty fast) mac pro.
