    Hello,

I had originally written this direct to Mark in response to his post and was told it would be better to write here: https://www.creativecow.net/articles/harvey_mark/avid_liquid_7_review/index.html

I am a new independant film (video) maker and I am about to purchase Liquid 7 and I have a question for you (anyone). What I found extremely impressive about Marks writeup, among many things was the ability of this software to make audio music. THAT could help me very much.

My question is, do you know about Avid Express Pro 5. Is it a step above Liquid? And most importantly, does it have the same audio capabilities with regard to writing music? Here is the excerpt of how Mark described Liquid and I am wondering if the same holds true on Express.

“So the other night I start playing around with this new SmartSound that Avid has included in Liquid 7. This has got to be one of the coolest things that I have ever seen, I mean heard. Many of you COWfolk know all about SmartSound, a program that automatically creates custom music tracks, not loops, but real songs with a beginning and an end, at any length you need. Instead of working in a separate application, though, you can now use SmartSound right inside Liquid.

You start by telling Liquid to create a SmartSound clip. It opens a new window, where you can pick music by Genre, Album and then by track. You then specify the length of clip that you want and hit preview. If you like it, you return to Liquid with the new clip and lay it on the timeline. Now when I said earlier that you specify the length, I

    Hi Eric,

If you are interested in Liquid 7, I have an unused version of Liquid 6 (legal) that you could upgrade to Liquid 7 for $199. I would sell it for $100 plus shipping and you would save $200 by the time you upgrade.

Let me know if you are interested.

    David,

Initially, I am trying to find out just exactly what the benefits are of shooting for Xpress Pro 5.0 HD versus Liquid 7. I have read plenty and if the dollar value is the indicator, obviously xpress is best but I was hoping for some feedback here.

I guess the main question is simple, does xpress contain ALL that liquid has and more?

    Thanks,

    Eric

No, Xpress Pro does not include SmartSound, so if that’s important to you, buy Liquid. The two products are quite different. In brief, Xpress is ultimately a better editor, with the traditional Avid ‘Media Composer’ interface, but a bigger learning curve than Liquid. For a new user, Liquid is faster to learn & includes many more effects, plus much better integration of DVD authoring.

    Mr Hackman,

Thanks…you ruined my day. 🙂 I already ordered Xpress. Can you read this description though? https://www.campustech.com/c/campust/94001.html

Down under product features, it says “Better value. Affordable Avid Xpress Pro HD software includes powerful title and graphic animation with Avid Marquee; DVD authoring with Sonic Solutions ReelDVD; encoding with Sorenson Squeeze Compression Suite; and professional soundtrack creation with SmartSound Sonicfire Pro.”

Is this not the same thing as the SmartSound in Liquid?

If not, can I add on Smartsound and will it integrate in?

    Thanks,

    Eric

Sorry – gave you bad info. Good news is that SmartSound is now also included in Xpress Pro HD. Enjoy.

No, as it turns out, you are right. They have bad poop on that website. It lists Smartsound then in small print in other areas (like Avid website), it says the academic version does not. Sighs….

Yes, the accurate answer is that SmartSound is bundled with the full version of Xpress Pro, but not the academic one. If it’s any consolation, I found that SmartSound, whilst a great ‘freebie’, is not as capable as a music library – I like http://www.audiolicense.net.
And Xpress/Media Composer is still the best editing interface around.

I appreciate the link. I am not exactly sure on the translation in dollars but I suppose 6.75 L is not bad? I have really read just one review on the SMartsound, I guess the fact that it automatically adjusts sound to length with opening and closing is appealing to me. Are these prices on the link you sent decent in your eyes?

Now, I did in fact by Avid Xpress Pro as well. So in the long run, that is still the best out there?

    I appreciate your continued assistance.

    Eric
