  • Indiana Jones map effect (yellow line going across the map)

Posted by Vladislav on August 12, 2005 at 10:53 pm

I’m doing video for a client who came from Africa trip and he’d like to show the map of the trip in the beginning of the video, where the yellow line would go across the map to the places they went, kind of like Indiana Jones effect.
Any ideas what is quickest easiest way?
I have Motion, FCP5, Photoshop and all that.
    Thank you
    Vlad

Just make the line in photoshop as an overlay on the map (the entire journey) Then make it an alpha channel, by selecting it and going to the channels tab and clicking the “make alpha channel” button in the bottom of the pane.Save as a .tif or.tga. Bring it into FCP and use the crop tool under the motion tab to give the traveling/moving line effect. Is this the type of thing you are looking for. If not explain a little more of what you are trying to accomplish.

    Vladislav,

There are a few ways to do this. If you are working over footage it can get a little complicated. If over a still, much easier. You would draw you route as an illustrator or Photoshop layer and in FCP use the crop tool to wipe it on over time.

If that gets too fidly, you can also try the “G Lines” plugin in Set 1 of my plugins: https://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/review_g_plugins.html

Create one map with the line, one map without the line. Apply a simple wipe left to right, or right to left and you have your animation.

Oh bockos, you’re just thinking like a “TV Guy”.

In Digital Post Production, we LIKE to use lots of Alpha Channels and Layers and Filters and cool stuff like that.

    😉
