InDesign Page Insertion
Posted by Raymond Delea on May 16, 2024 at 3:50 pmI have a 129 page InDesign document and here is my problem. From chapter 1 in my book onward I am able to insert pages and the insert goes where it is supposed to. But, every time I try to insert a page any where before chapter 1 the insert goes all the way to the beginning of the book.

May 17, 2024 at 5:44 amHi,
Could you send me a video or something to show me how you’re implementing the new pages before chapter 1? Thx!

Thanks for replying. In frustration, I added several pages where the page insertion action was working fine and then moved all of the text from the uncooperating pages to my newly inserted pages and deleted all of the initial pages. Problem solved. But I still have no idea what was going on with those previous pages. I’m just glad the problem was in the first ten pages of my book and not the last ten.

May 17, 2024 at 3:58 pmDid you try to change the number pagination? Maybe one of the problems was that you were trying to add new pages in the same section before page 1. If you do that, InDesign doesn’t allow to include pages before page 1 because that would be negative pages. What you can do is to create several sections for the book under the page numeration section.

May 17, 2024 at 4:05 pmI don’t think so. I have three master pages and my pagination did not start until Master Page B with my Foreword.

I can email you the first few pages of my book with the issue. If you try to insert a page before the Contents page the inserted pages go all the way to the beginning of the document.

May 17, 2024 at 8:28 pmThe arrow that you see on top of the page indicates that you placed a “start” of a new section. To remove this, make right-click on Page 1 of the document and select Numbering & Section Options. Then remove the check start section. I could implement any new pages in the document after that. Check the document that I sent you.

May 17, 2024 at 8:36 pmThanks so much Oscar. I searched and searched online for an answer and all I got were references to allowing pages to shuffle or the spread to shuffle.
