Incorporating FLASH animation in P2 workflow
Hi Guys…
I am producing a :30 PSA that is utilizing both live action and animation. The live action footage is going to be shot on a Panasonic HVX200 at the following camera setting: 720P24PN
The animation is being created in Flash and will be exported (.mov) before it is brought into the FCP timeline.
QUESTIONS:
1) In Flash, should the timeline be set up to 24fps or 12fps? The animators usually do work for the web and therefore always animate at 12 fps. However, for my particular workflow, should they be animating at 24fps?
2) Am I going to have any trouble bringing a flash exported animation into my FCP timeline?

Having no experience with this specific workflow yet, I can only offer a couple of guesses. The frame rate for the Flash created MOV should be 23.976 fps. That will match your 24P from the HVX. Whether the animator can work at 12fps, I’m not sure. See if you can research more on video output from Flash. The frame size should probably be 1280×720. That’s an educated guess assuming that Flash doesn’t have presets for non-square pixel formats such as DVCProHD 720p and thus you should work in the normal, square pixel size of the format. Even if such presets exist, it might be better to stay with the square pixel size to avoid the complications that can arise with non-square pixels.

I think you’re asking for trouble using Flash. I’ve never seen a good-looking QT export from Flash. Most folks would use AfterFX for this job. Tom is correct about frame size and frame rate of 23.976.
