  • Incorporating a 3D element…

Posted by Scott Clark on October 6, 2009 at 5:29 pm

Hey all, I’m working on a project right now with one little hang-up. I’m doing some very simple, mostly 2D animations that don’t preclude me from working in Vegas. However, I need to incorporate a small mannequin-type head in one part of the video that must rotate around the y-axis while lying on its side. As far as I know, vegas doesn’t support the import of 3D elements, so I’m a bit stumped at the moment. I suppose I could do this animation in an external program, render it, and bring it in as a simple 2D video layer, but I’m not sure what would be best to use for that instance either. Any ideas?

Do you want to buy 3D software? Maybe you have Photoshop CS4 extended. That might do the job already.

I do have Photoshop CS4, but I’m not terribly familiar with its 3D capabilities. Is it possible to extrapolate a 3D image from a 2D line drawing & animate it? Or is there a particular 3D object format that can be input and animated?

But if you like to buy something new, you can have a look at Boris Blue:

Thanks for your input. That looks like it potentially could work for my needs; unfortunately because the element I will be using is such a small part of this project it’s hard to justify the cost of that program. I will keep it under consideration, though. Let me know if you have any other thoughts. Thank you.

No, photoshopcan not create the 3D model, just import and animate it. You need to create the 3D model?

There are also free 3D animation programs like anim8tor

However when you need to create the 3D model you will need a program like 3D-Max, which requires some time to be able to work with.

A cheaper 3D modelling program is Carrara 3D (still very expensive if you need it only once):

You might want to look at the free DAZ Studio. This is really simply to use and you could probably make the mannequin head from one of their included figures. Just animate and render out and your done.
