  • Inadequate preroll for batch capture

I am re-digitizing footage that got deleted to reconnect the video to the clips in the fcp project. I have a tape with only a few frames of preroll. How can I digitize it, so that even if I lose the beginning, I can still get fcp to connect the new video with the original clip?

Typically, if you did not shoot at least 10 seconds of BLACK, before stating live on a tape, then you are limited to one of two solutions.

Either choose an in-point at the head of the clip at least 5 seconds into the tape timecode or capture it as NOW. Capture Now starts capturing when the tape is moving, by setting the camera or deck to DECK function and then pressing PLAY as you start Capture Now.

You might also try resetting the pre-roll time value in Preference, but that can also give you problems.

I really need to know is how do I get a clip to realign itself with the one used in my project which got trashed if it’s been captured with capture now and has a different TC starting point?

If the clip is offline you can add a couple seconds to the in point, which will shift the out point and try to capture that way. Another way is to capture now again as close as you can and re edit the new clip into the sequence.

The best way would be to re-log and digitize the clip with as much of the clip as you can grab with the pre roll you have and re cut the thing into the sequence. This will fix it for future re edits.

When you say “recut the thing in the sequence. This will fix it for future re-edits? How is that done other than reediting every shot I need out of the clip throughout the project where it’s needed?

I learned how to alter browser In and Out times in relation to the original clips Media In and Media Out. I just had to switch the pre-roll to only 1 second and lose 1 second of video, not the whole thing. You just have to double click the numbers in the columns in the browser, but my computer did seem to be sticky about willingness to perform that easily.
    Thanks to all!
