I am about to audio post my project. The audio work will be done in Protools. Seems protools these days only wants .mov files. mp4 file kinda work but not really. You can see the frame images on the time line but don’t play in viewer screen. .mov files seem to work better. I tried changing the .mp4 to dot .mov and that didn’t help. So I would prefer to render high quality ( esp audio) out of vegas in quicktime format. My problem is defaults that come up appear very cheesy, low quality.
I can change settings but I fear coming up with a non standard movie file. Or do a high quality conversion. Streamclip didn’t like the files that came out of vegas in mp4 codec using the main concept apple ipad 720 preset. (that is what I have been using in general and happy with the quality) I’m on Vegas 12 64bit, and Protools 9 MAC 32 bit.
Or should I try the DNXHD codec? Why is there always another can of worms down the road? 😉
    Thanks
    Brad

I’m trying to understand what you want to achieve. I would have thought that you didn’t care what the video quality was because it’s just a reference while you post the audio in ProTools. Then you take the audio out of ProTools back into Vegas Pro for the final render. That’s how I would handle it.

I have a free plug-in to Vegas Pro called VASST Trackalizer that will output your audio from Vegas as multiple audio tracks ready to be imported into ProTools. You might find this useful.

If you really want high quality MOV files in ProTools then Avid DNxHD is probably what you want. I tell you how to create the template on my web site in this tutorial:

Avid DNxHD Template for Vegas Pro

If you want to render that file with multiple audio tracks, you can follow this tutorial:

Multichannel Render Template in Vegas Pro

Between those two tutorials you should have exactly what you want.

Your query is a bit confusing to me, But rendering out in the
Quicktime format using the PhotoJpeg or Animation
Codec, with the Uncompressed audio format, is good enough.

Thanks Guys. To explain the confusion.
    1) I’ve been working on this project well over a year and was at the finish line when this cropped up. 2) Frustration with Apple/quicktime/ Avid. Companies that like to determine your work flow. I was very happy with the Mainconcept mp4 ipad codec. Heck it even looks very nice on my 32 inch Plasma. Geez it even played fine in quicktime. Was annoying that I was going to have to re-render, or convert.
The Quicktime menu was so odd to me choosing MP4, doesn’t change any other setting like the audio codec.
So a lot of frustration. Just a bad day.
John you are right the video quality doesn’t matter, and you guys are both right that the Motion Jpeg is pretty good. I tried the DNXHD and it does look great but wow on the file size.
The best part about this post is I learned about John’s plug in that will allow me to get the production audio into protools. ( I was going to clean up the VO in protools and production audio in Vegas.
    Thanks Both of you again

Glad you found that plug-in useful. Enjoy! 😉
