  • Improved OMF support in CS5.5?

Does anybody know if the OMF functions have been improved in CS5.5? I do a lot of work in 5.0.3 and I constantly have to deliver OMFs to a Sound department.
I currently find that I have to export OMFs almost track-by-track to avoid crashes and bugs. Stereo files imported as dual mono always fail on OMF export. Unenabled audio with dissolve effects on them always fail on OMF export.

I’m also nearing delivery on a massive project, meaning I have to deliver a lot of OMFs. Is it worth upgrading to 5.5 and changing horses mid-race?

You could download the free 30-day trial version and see for yourself.

There are a lot of bug fixes and stability improvements in Premiere Pro CS5.5, so I would expect your experience with this version to be better than that with Premiere Pro CS5.

I appreciate your entheuasism, Todd, and although I have seen a lot of stability increased in 5.5, OMF is not one of them. It’s still the same voodoo of hanging exports.

With OMF integration one of the HUGE problems lacking with FCX for a true professional workflow, Adobe really needs to fix this ASAP in order to give them the leg up. As of right now, it’s just a nice idea that doesn’t really work if you have projects with any complexity in them.

A workaround that I’ve found SORT OF works is to ALT+select all audio clips, then “Render and Replace”. Then you can export your OMF file without fail. Theer are several issues with this method – you have no handles on your audio files, which means you can’t crossfade in audio mixing, which is a HUGE problem, it “bakes in” all volume / gain adjustments you’ve made, but if needed, this will get the file out.

Be sure to duplicate your sequence before the render and replace, so you have access to the original audio before killing all handles!

Same problems here using PP CS5.5. Had the same problem with double mono tracks in timeline. They would only be exported as a single (!) mono track in the OMF. Solution: Delete all occurrences of that media file in all sequences so that you can change the properties from dual mono to stereo in the original file in the browser. Then re-cut the file onto a stereo track in your sequence. That workaround fixed the OMF export problem for me.
