  • Improve Sound Captured from Internal Videocam mike

Posted by Harry Katz on April 28, 2009 at 6:20 pm

My wireless mic wasn’t functioning and instead the internal mic from the cam picked up the sound in a couple of 3-4 minute videos of a subject several feet away. It has that hollow sound when the internal cam mic is used and I need to get a better result. Does anyone have any approaches either in FCP or Soundtrack Pro? I’m a beginner but working on a professional project. Thanks loads.

There’s no simple fix for your issue. The sound might be improved with some careful eq. Also, adding some compression might even out gain variations. But, as you raise the gain to make the voice more present, you also raise the ambient noise, so using noise reduction software would also help out. These tools are available in ST Pro, but I suggest you find an audio professional in your area to help out.

    I agree with John,

If you are working on something really important, and your budget can afford it, then you will need the help of an audio engineer. Even with all of the fancy audio adjustments that exist and a professional working the controls, you will only improve your audio by a small percentage. As a recording engineer that worked as a house engineer for 10 years, let me tell you that fixing poorly recorded sound is a nightmare. If you go in with the goal of just cleaning up the audio a bit, then you might be happy. If you expect to get a nice, clean, warm sound, then you will be disappointed. Get a quote from a studio before you do anything and see if it is even affordable. If not, you’re gonna have to do your best with SP. Sorry for the bad news. Good luck.

Thanks, guys… probably easier to arrange reshooting the talent, although that has its own logistics to deal with, but the lesser of the two evils…

    hi,
as an Audio and Video guy if you have FCS then just take the audio to Soundtrack Pro and then bring it back in. It is a great too and you already have it

Yes, just that as a beginner, and trying all the filters/combinations of filters I haven’t found anything suitable and I would imagine a knowledgable Soundtrack Pro user could look at the file and get closer than I probably could to the best result… anyone know any audio engineers in NY city?

    Thanks!

Yeah, I contacted them… and they said that they have professional people teaching there to earn extra money from their profession, and that if I wanted to contract with them I’d have to do it through the school at the rate of $1800 a day. I basically said, oh great, if I want some of these professionals’ advice, the school would have to end up getting a piece of my money too.

I now have a new vision of FMC and will try never to have any dealings with them again.
