So is VEGAS up to par with AVID Express or FCP express or greater yet?

I hope I don’t insult egos with that question. I just remember years ago hearing about Vegas being a simple editor, but from that review I read in STUDIO I’m thinking it might be something I’d be happy about buying.

So far on the PC side it seems like the only worthy NLE programs have been Avid or turnkey systems that use Adobe Premiere Pro.

I was told that Avid would cost way too much money to update all the time.

And 2 years ago or so, when I looked at Premiere Pro I could not get used to the lay out of it.

Does Vegas run alone all the time like FCP? Or is it incorporated into turnkey systems like Matrox the way Adobe sometimes is?

Vegas can be purchased in turnkey systems with AJA cards or Black Magic cards from companies like BOXX.
It also runs great on whatever PC you might have.
The review didn’t mention you can run multiple copies at once:
Capture while editing while rendering, anyone? 🙂

That said, if you’re an FCP user that struggled with Premiere, you *may* find the Vegas interface very different. Vegas is in no way designed to emulate a linear workflow, and is in no way a copy of any other app. It is it’s own personality. Other tools have recently begun stealing from the Vegas workflow, so it’s obvious folks are noticing the tool.
Download the demo, give er’ a whirl.

I couldn’t agree more. I am a one man operation with some help from my wife. I find the Vegas work flow to be great and when you have a lot of work to do it is all about work flow. Lots of guys need other NLEs but for my work I use Vegas. I do a lot of chromakey work with no problems. I really haven’t seen anything else do better. I have seen quick but nothing really better (DV). I save a lot of money using Vegas so I upgrade every year and use the extra money to buy plug-ins, music, backgrounds, training DVDs & other apps like particleIllusion 3. I bought Vegas 4 in 2003 and it is the best money I have ever spent and believe me I have wasted a lot of money in my life.

I am new to Vegas. I am an advanced Final Cut Pro user and Premiere 6.0 was my personal editing app until I could no longer make it work for what I do. I bought Vegas primarily based on price, the fact that it worked on my machine, and that Boris FX worked as a plug in. I was worried that I would not like it. I love it.

I prefer it to Final Cut.

I know I have barely scratched what Vegas is capable of doing, but the special effect capabilities of vegas far exceed my expectations, plus the fact that I can make sample level audio edits in my editing app without having to go to a seperate program really pleases me.

The interface took me a long time to get used to, but only because I was over-thinking it. It is not a simple interface, but it is very intuitive. It is also very fast. It is pretty easy to put together a project in a reasonable amount of time. I am used to three point editing, and giving that up to edit in Vegas was hard at first, but Vegas just makes sense.

Download the trial, and give it a run.

I’ve used both Final Cut and Vegas pretty extensively and I also have to say that I prefer Vegas – in layout and functions – particularly audio mixing to video.

It’s just all right there, and it’s powerful…
