I discovered this artist on Adobe.com and wondered if anyone knows how he creates the impression of a diorama. Obviously, I’d love to be able to recreate this in AE. It seems like I’ve seen a few Hummer commercials that use this effect. Maybe it’s all in acquisition and the actual lens choice?

looks to me like he takes images with a very wide angle lens, then colour grades the image before applying a lens blur filter (probably more than one for the near and far effects), and using gradient ramps to control the blur amount to emphasize the midground….

but then i could be wrong!!

    looks stunning though….however its done.

Well, now that I know what the technique is called – Tilt Shift – I found a web site tutorial. Here’s a link.

I was particularly unimpressed by what I saw.
Focus control is simple in AE. the trick is making it look like it was a deliberate manipulation of the image using camera and lens controls by a skilled craftsman instead of a Photoshop hack. There are many filters that emulate lens artifacts and authentic tilt and shift changes. but using them requires solid training in how a view camera functions.
