impossible to arrange correctly the clips in the browser

I name my clips as I capture. It helps me organize my edit. If you want to rename a clip later or fix a mis-named clip you can always do that after the capture. Just click on the clip name and change it.

Realize this doesn’t change the name of your clip on your drive. I’m a bit anal about naming so if I mess up a clip name, I rename it on the drive, and then reconnect it to the renamed clip in the bin.

dear John,
thank you for your answer, unfortunately my workflow is different…usually I work capturing the whole tape and giving the unique name to the first clip….finalcut gives the names with numbers to the clips every start-stop and uses its criteria (wrong)….

Too bad. I guess you’ll have to do it manually. Or look at the 2nd post by Steven Gonzales. His way will insert the needed zeros, too.

Hi Alvaro,

I have exactly the same problem, i capture all in one go and then like to open up all my clips as medium thumbnails on a 2nd screen to edit.
When i try to arrange them automatically it screws it all up. For such a sophisticated program it amazes me that it can’t count properly. clip 4-1 will be next to clip 4-10.
aaahh.. let me know if someone comes up with a sensible solution or FCP make an update.

Hey,
Thought I’d chime in with another way to take care of it.

Get this!: You can use Adobe Bridge to Batch Rename not only your still images, but your CLIPS too!

So, you can select all of your clips in within a folder, Command-Shift-R, and Choose the name plus another field for numbers (select two, or three or whatever digits from the pop-up). Hit enter and watch ’em go. I will suggest adding a dash after your first “name” field (to separate the name and the number: name-001)
