  • Import/Media Browse P2 footage?

I am a new PPro transplant from FCP. I love what I see so far and am excited about how the edit system works with After Effects and all of the other Adobe programs.

I shoot on the P2 format and my question is is there a way to grab a bunch of MXF clips at one time and import them? I have used the Media Browser and found the clips and brought them in one at a time but that takes a while. I really liked the Log and Transfer option in FCP and the fact that I could grab a bunch of files at one time and drag them in. I am looking forward to hot having to convert everything to QT just to see it. I found out that I can bring the entire Contents folder into PPro but that seems like overkill and I still have to sort through every folder to find the file. I would think there has to be a way to do this, I just need a little help.

I am running CS5 on a MacPro but do plan on jumping to 5.5 soon if it will help a bunch.

Thanks for all of your help.

    Hi David,

Actually, you should only grab the files from the video folder. You can grab them all at once, and it should import very fast.

    Vince,
Thanks for your help. I guess I don’t understand how to grab a bunch of them at one time. I can get one at a time, and they do import really fast; I just don’t see how to grab a bunch of videos at one time and not get the “Audio, Clip, Icon, Proxy, Video and Voice” parts to import as well and then have to sort every folder for the video.

Am I missing something? I’m sure it’s a simple step that can’t figure out. I really appreciate your help.

    Hi David….

So your workflow is something like this?

    1) You’ve copied the folder structure from your P2 Card to a location on your hard drive
    2) In Premiere Pro, in the Media Browser Panel, set to the MXF view navigated to root of folder structure
    3) this should show you all the clips in the MXF folder structure in a list view
    4) Shift click the files in the list in the media browser
    5) Drag to project panel.

    Does this help?

Thanks to both of you! I see how to do it now and will have to revise how I get footage off the cards. I have been using Panasonic P2CMS to move footage to a local drive. Doing so creates an individual folder for each clip. It also makes looking at Panasonic P2/MXF view impossible (until you go to each individual clip).

When I look at a P2 card or drag a card to a drive and create a folder for it everything works just fine. PPro is then able to see just the Video folder when in Panasonic P2/MXF view.

I never realized P2CMS split the footage so much. No big deal, this just means I have one less piece of software in the mix.

    Thanks for the help.
