I am trying to import from my P2 card to FCP from the camera. I never see the camera or P2 card on the desktop. Shouldn’t this mount and when I use capture I have to roll the p2 first to get control of the camera. I am using firewire. Should I be using USB?? Help

YOu need to install the P2 DRIVERS first. They are on the CD that came with the camera…and can also be found here:

This is an OLD tutorial on how to import P2 footage into FCP 5.0.4. The basics are the same, but the interface is VERY different.

    I GOTTA update this thing.

I have done that several times but no luck when I download it from your tutorial it comes up empty and when I use the disc from Panasonic nothing happens. As I previously stated, I can capture clips like I did from tape but not like P2 files and I really have limited device control. Something is wrong with this picture, you know……. Once I have loaded the driver inot my system where should it be and what should happen when the camera is connected via firewire?? I see no P2 icon with the no name as in your tutorial…….. RM

Comes up empty? I JUST downloaded it now and installed it (my old hard drive died so I needed to do this anyway)…and I received a file, and hit the installer. It’s there.

[envirodiver] “Once I have loaded the driver inot my system where should it be”

In the LIBRARY somewhere. It is a driver that is stored that you don’t access after you install it.

[envirodiver] “what should happen when the camera is connected via firewire??”

Uhh…connect the camera via firewire, turn the camera on, make sure it is in P2 mode. Press the MCR button on the back. Wait…or is it the thumbnail button on the top? GAH! THis is what I get for not owning a camera, and only doing this a few times.

The manual HAS to cover this. Or some other kind soul who has a camera will pop in.

Thanks, but the camera never shows up on the desktop nor does the p2 card in the camera. I can capture though so I guess I’ll keep going that way for the time being. I also need to shoot straight to the hard drive as well so that shold be an entire new set of issues as well. Hope someone has more info on this than I have………. RM

If you’re using the HVX200, here’s the link to the manual.

Here’s a 2006 workflow from Apple about using the HVX200:

This one really helps so thanks a lot. Any insight on shooting directly to an external hard drive instead of to a P2 card??? RM

You cannot shoot directly to an external hard drive. Well, YOU CAN, but it has to be a very specific one. You need the Firestore FS100. That is a drive that attaches to the camera. Many people report success with that option.
