  • Importing XDCAM footage from multiple folders

Posted by Tristan Hall on September 25, 2011 at 5:33 pm

I’ve been given a drive with hundreds of XDCAM files on it to import into Avid (via Clip Browser).
The Project was previously on Adobe Premier but I’ll be starting from scratch on Avid MC 5.
Every single one of the 300+ files is in a separate folder.
    I’ve never done this before.
Clip Browser doesn’t see the files unless you go into each individual folder to import them.
Short of doing this several hundred times and driving myself insane is there a short cut around this?
    Thanks for any help!

Are the clips still within the BPAV folder structure that they were in from the camera? Why not AMA?

Sorry, not used these files before – we’re still on tapes – just been given the drives and trying to deal with them. Currently copying over one by one, which is a ball ache.
    The folder structure is like:
PROJECT > STUDIO FOOTAGE > 454_1042_01 > 454_1042_01.mp4 (plus SMIL, PPN, XML and BIM file)
PROJECT > STUDIO FOOTAGE > 454_1043_01 > 454_1043_01.mp4 (plus SMIL, PPN, XML and BIM file)
    etc.

You should read the section in the section in Media Composer help on using AMA with XDCAM.

It sounds like you are doing this completely wrong.

What format are the files in exactly? If they were wrung through Premiere first, they are likely not in their original raw XDCam format. Unless, they were nice enough to give you the camera originals in their native file folder structure.

I know that many who use FCP will Log and Transfer the footage into some other codec, which creates .mov files. I’m betting the same thing holds true for Premiere.

Avid allows us to use the camera originals (ie, BPAV folder if it’s EX footage) and it can easily be accessed via Link to AMA Volume.
