I have had this situation before where some of the red footage was shot 16×9 and some of it at 2:1.
I remember a setting which was something along the lines of “resize to fit raster on import” which was a box you could check on import but I am buggered if I can find it now when I am faced wit a similar situation.
does anyone know where it is?
    thanks

    Importing it into what?

If you use MetaFuze to transcode to MXF, you can simply choose “Letterbox”. It will create 2:1 wth Ltbx inside 16×9. What was 16×9 will remain 16×9.

my workflow is red rushes> qt wrappers and ALE> Avid so I am importing into Avid.
thanks anyway I have found it.
in older versions it is the “Maintain and Resize” check box
in versions 3 and on its now “resize image to fit format raster” check box in the options of an import.

Are you not scaling on export from RED RUSHES? There is a fit to width, heigth when the 1920 x 1080 is selected. It will be a faster transcode if the movie size is already 1920 x 1080.

Also, look to the new REDCINE-X tha exports MXF/DNxHD directly.
