Importing with AJ-HD1400
Looking for help importing footage shot DVCPRO 720p 30fps into FCP.
I’m using Panasonic’s AJ-HD1400 Deck via Firewire and trying to downconvert to the DV Codec. Final Cut will only import when I choose the native format. I can control the deck with other codecs choosen…But FCP will only digitize the native footage.
I’ve gone through the menus on the deck and SEEM to have them set right. The Operating Insructions lead me to believe that the deck plays back through Firewire DVCPRO100/50 and DV at the same time or at least will be smart enough to know what FCP is looking for based on the system settings.
Has anyone used this particular deck in this situation? What am I missing?

First off, use the correct terminology. You are digitizing footage from a VTR. You are not importing a file.

You have to go into the 800 Menus to correctly set this up. I seem to recall the 890’s being the right area.

It’s either DVCPro HD or downconvert to DV, not both at the same time.

First off, use the correct terminology. You are digitizing footage from a VTR. You are not importing a file.
Digitzing would be from analog footage. If it is on digital tape it is already digitized.

Capturing footage from tape to any system is digitizing. It is a digital tape, it has not been digitized into a non-linear editing system. This is true of analog and digital video.
When you capture into a non-linear system you have options on how you would like to digitize it. The native format of the tape or converting it to another format.
Again, use the correct terminology when referring to capturing video into a non-linear editing system, which is digitizing.

But this is not technically accurate, as the footage is already digital, so it is not really being digitized, but rather encoded into whatever format the non-linear video editing software uses.
Electronic encoding transforms a signal into a form optimized for transmission or storage, generally done with a codec.

Thank you Walter. Capturing is not working. 890 menus did the trick. Basically setting them all to DV worked.

Glad that helped. Those 890 menus are different from the 1200A and actually tripped us up earlier this week when making DVCPro HD to DV dubs.

I really don’t put much stock in an “encyclopedia” anyone can edit.
Digitizing is the correct industry terminology for capturing. You can call it what you wish, but using the term “import” for capturing video is incorrect terminology in the Post industry.
