    Hello to all….
I am a new Vegas user, having purchased “Movie Studio+DVD”.
I am attempting my first project and have some problems I hope someone may be able to help me with.
I had a mini DV tape converted to DVD by a local video conversion facility. The DVD is not copy protected. The video files are in the .vob format. There are 3 files on the disc, two at .99 gig and one at .23 gig. My computer specs are 2.0 processor speed with 512 RAM. I use McAffee anti-virus but have disabled it while attempting to overcome my problem. My first attempt at adding the files to the media bin met with mixed results, that is, the first and third files were short, perhaps 15 seconds of video but with all the audio, while the second file loaded completely. I deleted and attempted several times, always with the same result. After a quick web search I discovered this forum and then very methodically read through a great many threads and related topics. I discovered that importing via the import>DVD camcorder was the fix I needed. I tried this and it worked, all of the files loading both audio and video correctly. I then spent several weeks working on my project and was really loving it, then….
Yesterday I turn on my computer, bring up my Vegas and it prompts me that my video files could not be found and showed the clips in the timeline as being “media offline”. I followed the prompts to search for my files, which it did and subsequently found (right where they were supposed to be)all of the files. After going through relocating all the files it then prompted me with “error – format not supported”. Rather confusing and upsetting I might add after spending about 50 hours on this project. Obvious things like did I save my project, did I move any files, did I change any parameters of my system or upgrade OS or anything of the sort, all have the correct answers….I changed nothing….one day it worked fine and the next day it is a whole different animal. I have read every thread relating to .vob files on this forum and also all threads generally relating to importing files and I have seen nothing that helps. Realizing I was fighting a losing battle I attempted to start over and I have deleted all the media from my project and tried to import it fresh and now it just prompts me with “error – format not supported”. I have my Vegas registered with Sony and have an account online and have the latest available update which says 6.0b, which I’m curious about since I have seen reference to 6.0c on this forum but it’s not available on the Sony download page. This may be my problem, but somehow I doubt it. This program worked fine, I loaded my original video files and then another one at a later date and had no problems at all and then….
If anyone has any insight or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated, I’m at my wits end and feel like I’ve got a real piece of junk in this Sony software.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I can’t offer any good suggestions as that’s never happened to me nor have I read about it happening to too many other users.
Generally the steps you’ve already taken cure the problem.

I do have one question though and that is why you chose DVD footage over original camcorder footage to edit with.
DV-AVI material is much easier on your computer than converted DVD footage.

edit: 6.0b was as far as VMS got.
You may have seen posts for Vegas but it went up to 6.0d

    Thanks Mike for the response.
In answer to your question, the camera I used was an internet cheapy and after 3 months it quit working (motor problems) so I was left with either purchasing a new camera or getting the DVD conversion done and well money being what it is…

I wonder if there is a file format that VMS will recognize readily that I can convert my .vob files to. As you can probably tell I’m very new to the world of video so any thoughts you might have are appreciated. Thanks again.

and to add further to mike’s obvious comments, you probably lost some ‘quality’ during the transfer to compressed jpeg (.vob) files.

    You’re right leslie.
    DV-AVI is approx. 14 GB/hr.
A 1 hr. DVD is only 4.3 GB. so something has to suffer and that’s usually picture quality 🙁

p.s. after 2 final weekends of it, the snow is finally gone here and temps are supposed to be around +15 C. this weekend!!

sorry to sort of hijack this thread for a moment, but i posted on dvi regarding lithium L batteries:

mike, what’s the best way, other than in camera to discharge them? my old np1 charger had a function built in, but the v700 i use doesn’t…

I’ll get the media offline prompt when my external drive goes to sleep….but the media comes back after the drive spins up to speed…could that have been the problem with your missing media?

I’ve also had the problem with just a short bit of video importing from a DVD. Never have found a reason but it seems that Vegas doesn’t like VOB files from certain DVD burners. If that happens I use a DVD ripper like Cinematizer from Mirizon software and that usually works like a charm…

Importing from the original tapes is the best capture option though…
