The video and the audio sources aren’t grouped together when I drag the entire thing onto the timeline, it appears like that.

How do I fix it so that the sources are lined up vertically by default?

    I’m using Vegas Pro 12, 64-bit.

You can try left clicking while dragging your media to the timeline,
and when you release it, you will see several options of what you want.

Several places where we can Ungroup Video from Audio, but just for starters uncheck the Ungroup Icon on the Toolbar:-

    Video Content Creator and Potter
    PC 7 64-bit 16gb * Intel® Core™i7-2600k Quad Core 3.40GHz * 2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 560 Ti
Cameras: Canon XF300 and two elderly XM2s

I agree with Graham, it sounds like you have enabled Ignore Event Grouping which is why grouping is turned off on the entire project.
