Importing video files in Avid Media Composer

Which camera are you using? If the MXF format you’re shooting in is supported by Avid, you can drop the MXF files onto your media drive in the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 (or any numbered) folder. Open Avid, open your Media Tool, choose to show Master Clips, drag the master clips to your bin and your media is immediately online.

If you’re using P2 cards a newer version of Avid, there’s a P2 Import function. You just import the master clips directly, choose the ones you want to keep, the do another P2 Import Media and it either transfers it directly to your media drives or transfers and transcodes it to DNxHD–your choice. There are benefits to both.

We need a little more info to give you a really solid Yes or No answer, though. Which camera exactly, what resolution and framte rate are you shooting, what version of Avid, etc…

Actually I don’t know the camera they will be using.
Can you tell me what kind of mxf files AVID support?

The only thing I know it that the camera will record on hard disk
and they can choose between AVI or MXF.
I suggested MXF.
Am I right?

I know the HVX200 and 200a both record to MXF that Avid reads directly. I assume the 500 series camera does too. I’d ask for a few clips of sample footage to test before things get too far ahead. That way you can determine if MXF really is the best option, and what workflow problems you might run into.

Hi Michael.
They told me theu are gonna use a nNovia QC Deck encoder with a Mediapac HD connected to a Sony DSR-250.
I read that the QC deck can write MXF OP1A.

Can you tell me if it is compatible with AVID?

I was trying to import my videos to the “bin” but I can’t. There is a message that says “This type of MPEG file is not supported”

I’ve tried it with .MPEG, and .VOB.
Do I have to convert my videos to .AVI or . MP4??
do u recommend me any programm to do that?
or it’s just my Avid that is not good. I was trying to used a trial from Avid, but I couldn;t so… I just downloaded but… I don;t know what’s the problem, the format, or my Avid?
