When I import video, I just connect my camera, import directly, and set the store it on an external drive. Is that the best way, or should I first put the videos on the external drive, and then import them? I will use my pictures in other applications, like Aperture.

It doesn’t matter whether you import them into Aperture first and then from the photos browser or into FCP first and then Aperture. If you do the latter, then your import settings decide on whether they’re copied to your FCP library or not.
