  • Importing .VF files into my project? May I please?

Posted by Jason Morton on March 12, 2012 at 8:20 pm

Hello friends I hope this post finds you all well!

This is my first real ($)project editing a large amount of video & separately recorded audio. Vegas 11 Platinum Suite
My goal is to have a menu driven DVD that can also play all the through. For this I read that I need to make 1 long project for the beg to end file.
While doing this it started to get big so rather then editing the big file I started to edit each piece in its own smaller file.
Now I want to import the smaller .vf to the big file & I can’t find the .vf’s in my explorer. (Is this a limitation to my program?)

If I can’t import the file, what is the next step?
Do I save it as some other file I can import (will this effect quality)?
Do I have to rebuild the file on the main timeline?
Is there a way to make a beg to end video using only a menu of files?

I appreciate your help. To figure this out would take me hours of trail & error.

video setting is 1920×1080 59.940i. I have the newest Vegas updated. Asus G74 I7 laptop with mobility Radeon HD5800 also updated. Editing on Acer 32″ tv/monitor.
    Thanks,
    @IdeaJason

“Now I want to import the smaller .vf to the big file & I can’t find the .vf’s in my explorer. (Is this a limitation to my program?)”

This is a feature called “nesting” and is only available in Vegas Pro.

“If I can’t import the file, what is the next step?
Do I save it as some other file I can import (will this effect quality)?”

That’s one way. Rendering to a lossless format is the way that’s usually done.
    What is/are your source format(s)?

“Do I have to rebuild the file on the main timeline?”

Vegas lets you open multiple copies at the same time.
Create a new master project, separately open one of your smaller projects, copy everything, paste that into your new project, save it and repeat until done.
Be advised that most track level FX will not copy/paste into a new project.

You DON’T need to have one big file to play the entire seqence of smaller video events in DVD Architect. By using a Playlist, you can add (or remove) individual segments. If you have 10 individual video segments, you could add each to a playlist, in the order you want them to play. You could also create a playlist that only plays segments 1-4, or 1,3,5,7,9. You can link a button on the menu to each of your playlists. I frequently setup my DVD menu with a button to “Play All”, which is setup to play all segments once, then return to the main menu. I also have a “Play Loop” button that plays all segments then automatically loops and continues to play again until the DVD is stopped (this is great for high school sports year end banquets – the video just loops endlessly).

Thanks Andrew. I’ve never used Playlists so, in addition to proving that there’s always more than one way to do something in Vegas/DVDA, this “old dog” just learned a new trick 🙂

Thank you both for your replies. Your teamwork answered my question & saved me hours of tinkering.

Looks like I will be going to the small files in a playlist since I can’t “nest” the .vf.

I know Pro has some good features I can use but this Platinum HD Studio version is pretty amazing for $60. My sony upgrade cost from ver. 9 to ver. 11 was $85 and I get less.

Glad I found such a great support community.
