importing .swf to avid media composer 6
Hiya, hope someone can help, ideally without dissolving me in technical terms… Thanks.
I am running Avid MC6.01 on Mac OSX 10.7.4 and I need to import and edit with a flash video that appears in .swf format on the web (specifically this one: https://www.guardian.co.uk/flash/page/0,,2201916,00.html). I downloaded the clip but it won’t import into Avid nor play/transform using mpeg streamclip etc. I’ve roamed the net for assistance and tried various supposed .swf to .mov tools, none seem to work.
I even followed one tip to use Camtasia to record the flash video playing, but the resulting .mproj file will also not import, encode to .mov etc…
It’s possible I’m missing sthg obvious, and I should probably keep experimenting all night till some combination just works, but presumably I’m not the first person to want to do this… Any tips?

The link isn’t working, but have you tried download helper in FireFox with a conversion as part of the process? It mght work, but I couldn’t get to your link to try it on that particular file.

I tried to convert it after the download, but nothing would work. It appears to be more of an interactive slide deck (ala PowerPoint), than it is a video file for playback which may be the problem.

Thanks, this is as far as I managed to get so far also – anyone got any idea how to import this media into Avid so as to edit with it?

You can import SWF files into After Effects or Premiere Pro. From there just render out a DNxHD quicktime and put it into Avid.

Many thanks for the tip; Unfortunately I don’t have a copy of nor know how to use either of those softwares; is this the only way?
Can anyone help me with this? It’s for a charity (tax justice) project, and I’m running low on time…

You can download a 30 day of after effects for free. As far as I know this is the only way that works without glitches, since Adobe owns the SWF format.

Is this 1 SWF the only file you need?
