hi,
I created some subtitles in DVD studio Pro, but I also need to import them into FCP so I can create a digital download.

I downloaded subtitle extractor and created the subtitles using several different settings, but I can’t get FCP 6 to import them. I did mange to download ‘jubler’ and import the subtitles into that.

I think it’s possible to export them from Jubler in a format that FCP will recognise but there are so many settings for ‘format’ and ‘encoding’ that I don’t know which ones to use? I tried the .xml file and UTF-8 (because this one was already selected) but the file created wouldn’t import into FCP.

In FCP I used ‘file ->import – xml file’ and usually get an error “no translation templates matching the selected XML file were found. Unable to import this file”.

I also used Jubler to save at a .stl file, using UTF-8 and 25 frames (I’m editing PAL footage). When I tried to import this into FCP i got the error ‘XML translation was aborted due to a critical error’.

Any advice gratefully received.

You can’t import srt file into FCP. FCP supports XML only as a project import/export feature. Though there are some applications on the market available that let you add subs to FCP projects. Google them.

Thanks for your help. I have managed to change the .srt file to a .xml file but I can’t import it into FCP – if I try ‘import file’ it says ‘unrecognised file type’. If I try ‘import xml’ it gives me the error message above in my first post.

i have been googling solutions for 24 hours without luck so far. I think my problem is I don’t know what format I need the subtitles in, to allow FCP to accept them.

You need a tool to create ‘proper’ formatted XML for FCP.

One way to do it is to use my application, Subbits.

Beside Bouke’s excellent Subbits you try my TitleExchange.
I can read DVDSP track files and convert them to FCP XML files with a generator of your choice (as long as the generator has no special text encoding/decoding needs like with Boris)
