we want to import our fullscreen backgrounds and BG animations into Avid projects but we cannot figure out the correct image size and aspect ratio. Currently we create fullscreens at 720×486 72dpi. When imported into the Avid, the image looks correct however there is approx. 20pxl “cut off” on both the top and bottom of the screen. at 640×480,the image fills the entire screen but Avid stretches the image to fit the screen causing distortion. Same with 720×540.

Does anyone know the correct settings to import graphics as well as best image size and file format? Thank you!

The answer depends on what package you’re using and how you’re creating the graphics. If you’re using a recent version of Photoshop that’s “rectangular pixel” aware, 720×486 is fine for graphics. You need to import them using the “601/709/nonsquare” setting. If you’re using old-school software that only outputs square pixel files, work with a 720×540 graphic size. Then import using the “maintain/resize” option.

The Avid is pretty agnostic when it comes to file formats. I usually work with PSD and PNG files. It will accept a slew of others however.

The correct graphic size is impacted by the project “media creation” settings. If you are using DV or DV 50 resolution you are working with video that is 720 by 480. If you import a graphic that is 720 by 486 Avid will crop six lines from the graphic. If you are working with 1 to 1 footage from betacam etc. you can import 720 by 486 graphics without losing anything.
