This is a silly question, but I’m not understanding the new codec options on the Symphony Nitris. I’ve just upgraded from an Meridian Symphony a few months ago and converting footage to Meridian was easy. The new MXF codecs are stumping me in terms of what codec to use for SD import.

Case in point.. SD After Effects project. 720×486. What setting do I render out to for a 2:1 MXF import so it imports as a fast import?

Today a client has given me 25 WMV files shot on his quickcam for editing. I’ve transcoded them all with ProCoder2 to DV50MXF. Its still taking forever to import into Avid. Its not a Fast import..

What am I doing wrong, or should I just go back to using omf?
    Help please.

The same rules apply as before, if you match the codec in your QT movie with the codec of your import, you will get a fast import. This is because Avid is just rewrapping the media into a the MXF container. It isn’t actually changing anything.

On the other hand, if anything mismatches, Avid has to convert the media and that is what takes a long time. This can be as simple as 601 vs. RGB color space.

When you went to import your DV50MXF files, was that the codec you chose to import to Avid? Same color space? No resizing?

If you are in an HD project, and import an SD movie it will resize it. You can avoid that by changing the project back to SD and then importing. Then when you switch the project back to HD and cut those files into the timeline they will automatically be resized to HD in RT. For the record, I have better luck resizing and transcoding in external software and then importing into the HD project.

when you import select same as source and the import should take no time at all as teh avid will not have to re-size, however the .mfx files can be huge.
