  • IMPORTING RED footage into FCP

Hi there! First time editing footage from a RED camera, so bear with me on my n00bness…

Here’s the folder layout I have on my External HD:

    Folders 1 through 8
    in each folder there lies
    > log
    > RDM (folder)
    > .profile
    > .profile

I open the folder RDM and it brings up another 1-8 folders .RDC

When I click each folder there lies
    > .RSD 1.09 GB
    > F .MOV 16kb
    > H .MOV 16kb
    > M .MOV 16kb
    > P .MOV 16kb

F file is largest, P is smallest.

P plays fine on my intel based MAC. I have 3×2 Quad Core Intel with 16GB of ram. But when I even play the F.mov FCP crashes. I installed the QT codec and Red Alert plugin from https://www.red.com/support, but the Log and Transfer plugin wouldn’t allow me to install.

Can someone please give me the runaround on how to go about staying organized with all of these folders and subfolders and making sure I am in good shape to edit this darn good lookin’ footage 🙂 As much information as you’d like to send my way I’d be grateful.

    My cell phone is 206.251.0958
    Thanks,
    Keith

you may have an intel mac- but my guess is you are not on the most current versions of the OS / QT/ FCP.

FYI – that F movie is for “full size” and since FCP cannot currently handle anything larger than 2k you are not likely to get that to play.

What Software versions and if you have a video card (not graphics) would help.

you also might try to search the RED forum here also.

that would make sense not having the most recent version of FCP, though it is 6.0 I am not connected to the internet through that computer. so when i downloaded the codecs and plugins i brought them over from another computer and then installed them. any idea where I can get the latest version of fcp?

I am trying to import red files from a recognized drive into fcp 6.0. I downloaded RED Final Cut Studio Installer_v1.0.0.zip. When I go to log and transfer there is nothing under preferences for the red cam. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong. I have a Macbook Pro Intel duo with FCP 6.0. Please help lead the blind. I have been having quite a problem figuring this out. Thank you.

Best to go to the RED site and check their recommended workflows. I suspect the L&T RED installer is for FCP7. Before I went to vers 7 I used REDrushes to batch convert the RED files to ProRes for editing. You can download REDrushes from the RED site and it works.
