I am exporting quicktime movies with alpha…first trying “animation” and then trying “AVIDDNxHD”. I usually import these quicktimes with alphas into Avid with the “Invert Alpha” checked but for the past few days my movies have been importing all black and I can’t see anything. When I uncheck “Invert Alpha” they now import fine. Is there any reason for this?? Am I changing a setting that I’m unaware of?? I’d like to be able to leave the settings the same because I have extremely tight deadlines and don’t usually have time to be importing multiple times.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

i might be wrong, but i think it depends on the alpha… some are white, others black

When you export using Avid codecs like DNxHD the alpha channel matches what Avid expects (because it is an Avid codec) and there is no need to invert it. Avid does its alpha backwards from a lot of things, so many things do require you to invert, but once you are exporting Avid codecs inverting is no longer necessary.

The problem I have with this is I also need to export stills (tiffs) with alpha channels and so the avid does need to have the “invert alpha” checked. I work in news as the graphic artist so it’s the editors that are actually importing in the graphics and would need to be switching back and forth import settings. We’re trying to figure out the best solution to make sure everything is as consistent as possible. Is using the AVID DNxHD the best codec to use when exporting a movie or should I try something else so that the editor can simply leave the import setting on “invert alpha” and not have to go back and forth. I’ve been told that quicktime animation with alpha doesn’t work with AVID anymore.

No need to invert alphas for a QT… just stills.
I still use the good ole meridien codec more oftent han not. Fast imports, alpha friendly… all good.
