Importing Prores footage to FCP
When importing footage using a Prores codec, is the footage lossy? What I mean is, not is the footage (if importing into FCP for example) lossy WHILE editing in FCP, I know it is, but when log and transferring from a Canon 5D or Red, is the actual media that’s downloaded onto your computer lossy, meaning you have to import it another way to get the footage lossless for a final output?

Probably not, unless you chose some really odd setting for the prores. There is a Canon plugin for using the log and transfer window with that footage BTW… might try that.

ProRes is compressed but is considered lossless because it is virtually impossible to pick the compression. In the case of the 5D it is not reducing the frame size so you are not going to notice the conversion to ProRes.
RED footage can be in larger pixel dimensions than ProRes can support so if you start with frame sizes larger than 2K, you are reducing the resolution in making the down conversion to ProRes at 2K, so the process loses resolution. This would be the case if you used an uncompressed codec so compared to that, the ProRes is, again, almost impossible to pick.
