  • Importing .png files to FCP – help

Posted by Joey Williams on June 30, 2009 at 5:19 pm

I have a DVD that I’m currently putting together. I have some images that I need to composite over the video in certain parts, and I’m having trouble with it. I created the images in Adobe Illustrator (CS4), and exported them as .png files. For some reason, when I try to import the .png files to FCP, it doesn’t take them. It will take .jpeg and .tiff, but not .png. I need the .png (or some equivalent) because .png files can export a transparent background that .jped and .tiff do not.

    Any ideas? Please help.

The problematic PNGs are mostly CYMK and need to be converted to RGB in Photoshop.

So true. Thank you very much.

I must say I’m a little surprised there isn’t a way to head that off in Illustator… that would make things too easy I suppose.

    Thanks.

.tiff does support transparency. I’m not sure if FCP sees it, though. The workaround is to use add an alpha channel to your .tiff to define the transparency for FCP.
