Importing P2 media to Premiere
When I import my P2 media into Premiere Cs6/CC it creates several different file types in my bin. I get: Audio, .BMP images, and the video (w/ audio) files i want. Is there a way to import the video file that has audio, and not have it create all the other file types too? Do I not need to drop the entire “CONTENTS” folder in, and only select the “VIDEO” files? Or am I missing a setting?
I have just began to work with the Adobe suite, coming from FCP7. I am used to having to transcode my P2 media. I loved that Premiere did not require transcoding, but the way it is interpreting the media now is creating more work than going through the transcode process.

Hiya….
Use the media browser panel in PPro and navigate to where your contents folder is on you local drive.
PPro will recognize it and allow you to bring it as a clip.

Right, I can import the media, and I am able to bring in the video and edit it. It is just that it makes a separate audio file and a separate .bmp file for every full (a/v) clip. I would like to know how to make it NOT create those additional files. It makes organizing more time consuming… to go back and delete the files that are not edit-able…

Are you using the Media Browser built into Premiere Pro to navigate to your footage, as Alex suggested?

Yes, I think so. I have tried going File>import, and also double clicking in the media panel of the UI.

Using File–>Import only shows you files as your computer OS sees them. You need to be specifically in the Media Browser inside of Permiere Pro. In Premiere use Shift+8 to bring up the Media Browser. From the Media Browser navigate to your media, provided the P2 card was copied over exactly as it was on the card (same folder structure), Premiere should be able to read the folder structure and show you just the videos of that format (in your case P2).

Hi Ryan,
Actually this doesn’t fix the problem in all cases, as I experience exactly the same issue when importing a P2 media CONTENTS folder via the media browser IN Premiere. I select the folder to import and get separate files still (.BMPs, separate audio and video files, etc).
Importing the compiled video + audio files inside the CONTENTS folder as they should appear in media browser is not an option, as:
a) Using the media browser, sometimes I will click on the external drive to show all contained media, and NOTHING will come up in spite of the P2 CONTENTs folders being there. Thus, importing via the project window will give me separate files anyway.
b) Even IF I drag this CONTENTs folder to a local location, searching through the media browser only reveals about half of the files with audio. The other half have no audio, when audio was recorded to them in the same way it was recorded for the other clips, on the same shoot, sequentially. Playback in the camera itself tells us the clips have audio. Investigation of the properties of the audio clips separately in comparison with audio clips of video files that work is also identical.
Do you have any ideas why this might be happening?

Yeah, I am running into this issue now too. It just started since we converted to OS 10.9 (Mavericks) as far as I can tell.
In my case, I have tried dragging the >MXF files into the Project window, and I have tried accessing them through Media Browser, but both times I have a weird result: The clips will play back in the source monitor with audio, but when I drag them into the timeline, there are no audio tracks. Even if I set In and Out points in the Source window and try to grab the “drag audio only” button, same results; no audio.
This is driving me nuts. I am having to convert everything to ProRes before I can even start an edit!!!
We don’t use P2 all the time, but I am pretty sure that this issue didn’t happen after the upgrade to CC but after the upgrade to Mavericks.
Any help is appreciated. Also, is anyone else experiencing this, or is the ghost in my machine just acting up again.Eric McCarthy
