  • Importing NTSC MiniDV into FCP5

    Hello,

I did a wedding video using two cameras. One was PAL and the other was NTSC.
I have no trouble importing the PAL video.

But when I try to Capture the NTSC tape, even though Capture window says VTR OK (and will control the tape deck), it only shows colour bars and will not import the footage (it says waiting for timecode and then says there is no footage).

I have changed all the settings in FCP to NTSC, trashed preferences, and tried opening it all in a new project but I cannot get it to work.

I’m sure it’s something obvious. But I have never been able to import NTSC footage. I am using a PD150 to try to import. The tape plays fine in the camera.

Hope someone can help. The groom is getting impatient…

    Thanks

Make sure your deck supports NTSC

This is a hardware issue that has nothing to do with FCP and everything to do with your deck

    Yes, I tried Easy Setup.
And yes, the camera does play back NTSC tapes.
On the settings menu in VCR mode I have chosen NTSC PB (which I assume means playback?)
The only thing I can think is to try using a device which also records in NTSC.
    Any other suggestions still welcome…

do you see any output from the deck to an NTSC monitor?

Hi – I’m having exactly the same problem. I have NTSC footage on mini dv that plays fine on 2 separate cameras. I have changed the setup settings in final cut to NTSC but it cannot locate the video? Is there something I need to alter?

Hello, I sorted out the problem. Even though the Sony camera I was using (PD150) can play back NTSC tapes, it can not be used to import. That’s just the way it is with a lot of Sony cameras. You need to import on a camera that will record as well as play back in NTSC. I used a Z1, first changing the settings on the camera to NTSC. Hope that helps.
