I have renderings I need to edit. The file in a .mpg. When I try to import them Premiere says the file is not supported. I cannot open the file with Quicktime. I have to use VLC media player.

After Effects will open the file. Is rendering it out there a solution? If so what setting should I use to maintain original quality?

    Thank you for any help.

MPEG is a delivery format, not an editing format.
Decompress the file, prior to import to Premiere.
It sounds like you can decompress in AE – Video:Uncompressed, Audio, PCM WAV.
I usually use AVS Video Converter for this.
You also may want to open your clip with GSpot Codec Information Appliance. It gives you a great deal of information about a video file, including the codecs that are used.
